Australian Government Backs Future Trades with New Apprenticeship Incentives

The Australian Government is investing in the future of Australia’s workforce with the launch of the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) — a major initiative designed to support apprentices in two priority sectors: clean energy and housing construction.

This program offers direct financial support to eligible apprentices and aims to boost completion rates in trades that are essential to Australia’s sustainability and infrastructure goals.

Two Targeted Streams Supporting Australia’s Growth

New Energy Apprenticeship (NEA) Stream
This stream supports apprentices working in the clean energy sector, including roles that involve:

  • Designing and building clean energy infrastructure
  • Transmitting and distributing renewable or low-emissions energy
  • Installing and maintaining technologies that replace fossil fuels

The NEA stream is helping Australia transition to a low-emissions economy by developing a skilled, future-ready workforce.

Housing Construction Apprenticeship (HCA) Stream
This stream focuses on apprentices in residential construction, including building, repairing, and renovating homes, apartments, and aged care facilities.

With housing demand on the rise, the HCA stream is essential to growing the workforce that will meet Australia’s housing needs.

Financial Incentives for Apprentices

Eligible apprentices can receive:

  • Up to $10,000 for full-time apprenticeships
  • Up to $5,000 for part-time apprenticeships

Payments are made at key milestones: 6, 12, 24, and 36 months — plus a final payment upon completion.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Key Apprenticeship Program, apprentices must:

  • start their apprenticeship on or after 1 July 2025
  • be enrolled in a Certificate III, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma listed on the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List
  • be employed or hosted by an organisation offering hands-on experience in either clean energy or housing construction.
