MRAEL’S Parent Pathways Program empowering single parents

Mackay single mum Anita* is building a new future for herself and son, thanks to the Parent Pathways program delivered by MRAEL (part of the IntoWork Group).

Parent Pathways is a voluntary service designed to support parents and carers of children under six who are not in paid employment and receive a Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, or Special Benefit. The program offers flexible support with guidance of a qualified mentor to help parents achieve their personal, training, or work aspirations.

MRAEL was exclusively awarded the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Parent Pathways contract in the Mackay region in late 2024. MRAEL provides mobile and outreach services across ten locations, including Mackay, Bowen, Cannonvale, Clermont, Collinsville, Dysart, Moranbah, Nebo, Proserpine, and Sarina.

Since November 2024, more than 100 parents have benefited from our program, receiving vital support services such as career guidance, childcare assistance, Allied Health services, transport assistance, clothing, financial support, domestic violence support, and additional personalised training programs to improve skills and boost their job opportunities.

Anita’s experience with the program has been transformative, providing her with support and resources she needed to overcome significant barriers and build a brighter future for herself and her toddler.

The 20-year-old was first referred to the program by Centrelink. Initially, she was hesitant, having experienced limited support from previous parenting programs. However, the personalised and comprehensive approach of MRAEL’s Parent Pathways quickly won her over.

“Before joining Parent Pathways, I felt like I was being thrown into the deep end. There was a lot of talk, but not much action. With MRAEL’s Parent Pathways, it’s different. My provider and I meet frequently, and when I express a need, it gets addressed. It’s a huge relief,” Anita said.

One of the most significant barriers Anita faced was the lack of a driver’s license. This hindered her ability to secure employment and manage daily tasks. MRAEL stepped in, funding her driving lessons and the cost of her license. “I was able to complete my driving lessons through the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) and Parent Pathways covered the costs. Getting my license has been a game-changer,” Anita said.

In addition to transportation, Anita has faced challenges with housing and mental health, “Living in Mackay has been tough, especially with the lack of affordable rentals. We’re moving out of our current house in May and will be staying with a family friend.”

The program has also connected her with a local women’s centre, where she receives caseworker therapy and support to address her anxiety, depression, and PTSD, all stemming from a history of domestic violence, “Just having someone to talk to and vent to has been incredibly helpful. The women’s centre has been a lifeline, and support from my provider at Parent Pathways has been invaluable,” she said.

Looking ahead, Anita is excited about the next chapter of her life. She and her son are moving to another township at the end of April, where MRAEL has a local office. This move will provide her with a fresh start and an opportunity to pursue employment.

“I’m looking at retail jobs to start with, just to get back into the workforce. It’s been a few years, and I want to ease back in. My provider has been helping me with my resume and job applications, which is a huge relief,” Anita said.

Anita’s experience with Parent Pathways has been overwhelmingly positive. She has noticed significant improvements in her life, from financial stability to mental well-being. “The program has helped me in so many ways, from groceries to career guidance. I feel more confident and supported than ever before,” she said.

MRAEL CEO Jason Allen is thrilled with the impact the program is having. “Our team is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of parents and carers in the Mackay region. We are dedicated to helping them build more vibrant futures for themselves and their families,” he said.

For parents and carers considering joining the Parent Pathways program, Anita’s advice is clear: “Don’t hesitate. The support and resources are there for you, and they can make a world of difference.”

With an impressive track record spanning 40 years this year, and as part of the IntoWork Group, MRAEL stands as Queensland’s foremost provider of education, training and employment services. MRAEL manages several entities, all united by the common goal of fostering growth, development and sustainability of a skilled future workforce.
