Roles and responsibilities of the apprenticeship/traineeship process

The journey of completing an apprenticeship or traineeship involves coordination from a range of business and government bodies. The role each plays is summarised below.

  1. Partner Organisation (MRAEL)/Employer
As the initial employer of your apprentice or trainee, MRAEL facilitates recruitment, candidate selection, retention, payroll, performance and training management, and monitoring of workplace health and safety. We offer organisations the flexibility to have as much input into apprentice management as their business priorities allow. Alternatively, if an organisation prefers to take on the role of legal employer of an apprentice or trainee, MRAEL’s management services can be provided if required.
  2. Parents/Guardians
If the apprentice or trainee is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign the National Training Contract. This legally binding document outlines the agreed length of training and the type of apprenticeship or traineeship being undertaken.
  3. Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
This is the organisation that delivers the training, conducts assessments and issues the nationally-recognised qualification on completion of the apprenticeship/traineeship. Training may take place on the job or away from the workplace, such as at TAFE.
  4. Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) Providers
AASN providers are contracted by the Australian government to provide information, support and assistance to employers, apprentices and trainees to assist them with the sign-up and administration of their National Training Contract. They also provide services to identified individuals and employers to help them successfully complete their apprenticeship or traineeship arrangements.
  5. State Training Authority (STA)
The Queensland state government is the body responsible for registering the National Training Contract. Any changes to the National Training Contract must be approved by the Queensland government.
